10 paint colours for a calm and restful bedroom
Written by Sophie Clemson
Bedrooms are one of the most popular areas of peoples homes that we design because they are very important rooms (second only to living rooms). We spend many hours in our bedrooms, and even if our eyes are shut half the time, people are very clear about how they want their bedrooms to look, and more importantly, feel. A calm, restful sanctuary to retreat to at the end of day are pretty universal wants. Recently, when it came to decorating my own bedroom, I quickly realised that I, too, wanted to join the relaxing and cosy gang.
So where to begin? Choosing the right colour palette sets the tone from the start with the paint colour helping to evoke that calm and restful feeling we’re all wanting to achieve. To help you create your own cosy and serene retreat in your bedroom, I’ve chosen my top 10 beautiful shades. I’ve also included some of the paint colours The Living House team have used in their own bedrooms and shared why they work so well.
Little Greene Joanna
If you’re wanting to keep your bedroom light and neutral, then Joanna is a fantastic choice. It has those warm undertones to make your bedroom feel cosy. It’s a pale taupe shade, which will create the perfect neutral base for you to build on and bring in some accent colours. This is one of my favourite neutrals from Little Greene, it's so versatile I have just used this shade in my hall, stairs, and landing.
Farrow & Ball De Nimes
If dark and moody interiors are your thing, De Nimes is a beautiful blue denim shade that will add depth to your bedroom and create a sense of calm. It works well as a base if you want to introduce bold accent colours, such as rich terracotta oranges or mustard yellows.
Earthborn Sunday Stroll
Green is one of my favourite colours to use in my home. I think it’s a colour that oozes restfulness, so I had to include the gorgeous Sunday Stroll within the list. Earthborn describes Sunday Stroll as a relaxed green with calming grey undertones, and I couldn’t agree more, it's the perfect shade to help you feel chilled out after a long day.
Paint and Paper Library Powder IV
If you’re looking for a gentle paint colour for your bedroom, then Powder IV is definitely worth considering. If you’re wanting to paint your bedroom pink without it feeling ‘too pink’, this is a soft plaster pink shade that will bring warmth without the space feeling too feminine.
Farrow & Ball Blue Gray
Blue Gray is one of the ultimate restful paint colours for a bedroom. I may be biased as I have just painted my bedroom in this exact shade, but I can confirm it has such a cocooning calming effect, and I’m so glad I chose this colour. I have painted every wall, including the ceiling, in Blue Gray and paired this with Joa’s White for the panelling and woodwork. What I love most about this shade is how the pigment changes the appearance of the colour, sometimes you see more of the blue tones and other times the green, depending on the natural light.
Lick Beige 02
Warm and earthy tones are becoming more popular. Our customers are wanting to go slightly darker than an off white and add more depth to their bedrooms. Lick describes Beige 02 as an earthy biscuit beige. I can definitely imagine being curled up in bed with a morning cuppa, feeling all cosy with this warm neutral paint colour.
Morris & Co Olive Fruit
Olive Fruit is another shade I have used in my home, this time for the home office/guest bedroom. If you have a north facing room, like I do, I recommend getting a sample of this gorgeous olive green. It has yellow undertones that will warm up your chilly north facing room. You may think this shade is too dark for a bedroom that lacks natural light, but using Olive Fruit will embrace the darkness and make your bedroom feel so cosy!
Little Greene Celestial Blue
Celestial Blue is a soft, dusky blue shade. Catherine has used this in her bedroom, and she can assure you it's a colour that will make your bedroom feel calm. Catherine says, “With a busy family life, it's important to me that my bedroom is a place I can relax and retreat to after a long day of taking care of everyone else, it’s my haven! I always say particular colours sing to me, by this, I mean they bring me joy, and Celestial Blue does exactly that.”
Farrow & Ball Dimity
Dimity is a gorgeous neutral shade, and Farrow and Ball class this as one of their red based neutrals. This is why you may be able to subtly see pink tones within this colour. The red undertones mean Dimity is another great option if you have a north facing room to make it feel warmer.
Little Greene Tracery II
Green is often the colour that people associate with a sense of calm, so it felt fitting to conclude the list of 10 calm and restful paint colours with another green gem. Tracery II by Little Greene is a grey-green shade, which is soothing and will bring tranquillity to any space. For a cosy and serene bedroom, I recommend colour drenching your bedroom in Tracery II.
